Why were the first Disney cartoons full of violence, drinking and smoking? I am not sure why Walt Disney made his first cartoons so violent and have drinking and smoking in them. he does not seem like the type of person that would allow this. Was he different in his younger days then when he was older and started Disney land? |
| Back when animation was starting to catch on, people just thought it was a cool new thing, not something that is made only for guys like today. Those things containing the smoking and drinking and violence were not aimed at guys. Plus I don't think television had as big restrictions back then as it does today (where everything is severely regulated today). Also it was like the 1930s, they had different views of smoking and drinking back then. Besides it's more realistic that way. |
Why do older people think their cartoons were so wholesome? Shows like Bugs Bunny, Taz, and all the other looney toons were way more violent than cartoons today. Bugs Bunny always got chased around by Elmer Fudd with a shotgun, Wile E. Coyote always tried to blow up the Road Runner, etc.. Plus, in all the cartoons, people smoked and got drunk. They can't even much show real bullets in newer cartoons, they're all laser-like bullets. They can't even show drinking and smoking in new cartoons. Explain to me how newer cartoons are less wholesome and more violent than old ones. |
New cartoons are fine.
Unless you are talking about Anime. Which is just drivel, to the lowest point. Completely useless. |
How far is to far ?to ban smoking in cartoons made over 30 years ago.? will homer simpson be band from saying DO'H because it's to close to doughnuts which are fatting or even spike the dog from chasing tom because it betrays crulity to animals. |
Yet more PC, nanny state rubbish!
Think of all the things the government could accomplish if it talked about some of the thousands of REAL problems this country has instead of wasting everybody's time and money! |
Do you think that it is ludicrous that they are banning smoking in cartoons? When characters like Tom and Jerry and Road runner try to kill each other or badley hurt each other in every episode, surley if they are going to that extreame then ban it all??????????????? |
| Big brother is watching. Before long they are going to ban thinking about smoking. |
Tom and Jerry Cartoons Banned because of smoking in them? I don't get it...
They took one of the most beloved cartoons of my generation and ruined it by deeming some of the most entertaining episodes just because of a 10 second shot with a cigarette?
I don't understand why they would take out somthing so insignificant in these cartoons. They took out any episode with even the hint of tobacco or smoking but they left in at least 20 minutes of wanton destruction and violence. What are these idiots trying to tell todays generation? that its fine to smash in your friends face in, blow things up and cause random havoc under the condition that you don't smoke while doing it?
tell me, what idiot brought this into effect and why? |
its ******* ridiculous! I mean these people who run and brought these to effects don't remember a damn thing about their guyhood! I mean when i was young i didn't think about smoking or drinking i just wanted to see more cartoons!
I think its also ridiculous that when 911 happen anymore footage in a TV show that had the twin towers would get canceled or close two it
Simpson's - new york episode( haven't seen it on TV since!)
there was a brief show called "action man" that was canceled because of an episode that had the twin towers. Its ******* ridiculous The media and our people overreact to certain situations and events and do not know how to handle themselves for the better. Man I'm getting all pissed off!
and another thing the whole Janet Jackson nipple slip at the super bowl! it was on for a millisecond and the next day America losts its god damn mind! I think a guy is more disturbed by having adults telling them and saying how seeing the boob was indecent, immoral, disgusting, shocking in front of guyren eyes then FOR THE CHILD TO ACTUALLY SEEING ONE!!!!!! |
I am searching for a title of a PSA about Smoking/Drugs which featured a bunch of Cartoons in the 90's? The commercial or PSA had the muppet Babies Ninja Turtles and other cartoons or live action which had a guy smoking or something of that nature and they all try to stop him from trying. anyone have a youtube link or wiki entry to wha this is? i remember watching as a young guy like 10 or so and watching this. thanks |
That's "Cartoon All Stars to the Rescue". I remember watching that too. Man, it was surreal to see so many of my favorite cartoon characters actually interacting together on one show.
I actually found the entire video! (complete with the introduction from Daddy Bush and the Ronald McDonald House thing at the beginning)
video.google.com/videoplay?docid=…
Enjoy! |
Oh my god they've banned smoking in Tom and Jerry cartoons !? I realise this isn't a question but I had to express my disbelief at the stupidity of our society - we are talking about a cartoon cat and mouse after all. I don't know anyone thats started smoking because they wanted to look like a animated cat from the 50's |
Well I have to say that I started smoking at the age of 14 not because I wanted to look like an animated cat but simply because I saw the big black mama character as a role model. For several years I went around with a mop bucket and a tea towel over my head yelling "THOMAS!!!!" and a half lit cigarette in my hand. I think it did me a lot of damage and ruined my potential sex life as girls seemed not instantly attracted to me. Not sure if it was the mop and bucket or the cigarrete that put them off however I now realise that a 14 year old white boy dressed as a cleaner has not got a huge amount of appeal except in certain specialist areas. Still dont understand why when my cat brings in mice from the field, why they seem content to let the cat chew them to bits and dont leap out of the cats gob and smash them in the face with a frying pan,it seems the sensible thing to me
Now 46 still smoking and frankly I blame it all on Hannah Barberra or whatever they were called |
Recently, smoking was detected in old Tom and Jerry cartoons. PC mindset to the rescue!? ...A British outfit decided these "smoking sequences" in Tom and Jerry were harmful to guyren (encouraging them to smoke) and so they removed the harmful smoking parts from these Tom and Jerry cartoons.
...Man, was I glad! I remember how harmful Popeye and his pipe were to me - I went out immediately as a young guy and quickly became addicted to Sir Walter Raleigh in a can.
...Seriously, will the idiocy ever stop? |
The idocy will not end..... And in fact Popeye has fallen before the "God of Censoring". In later (80s or 90s series) episodes Popeye cartoons had moral lessons after the episode. And one explained that he doesn't smoke his pipe "It's just for tooting!"
I hate "Political Correctness". |
If Tom and Jerry are to banned from smoking, then should we also ban the other cartoon heavy smokers? Copied this re Tom and Jerry not allowed to smoke .
Classic cartoons are to have smoking scenes cut out.
Politically correct TV chiefs made the decision as guys' channel Boomerang after Ofcome investigated a complaint.
The complaint about Tom and Jerry said scenes in which Tom smoked a roll up in one episode and a rival cat smoked a cigar in another were inappropriate for young viewers.
According to The Sun Ofcom said: "We recognise that these are historic cartoons, mostly produced in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, at a time when smoking was more generally accepted.
"The smoking usually appears in a stylised manner and it is frequently not condoned, but the level for editorial justification required for the inclusion of smoking in such cartoons is necessarily high."
What about Crusty the clown...adicted to most things. |
Well, I've never smoked pot in my entire life, but I think Half Baked is one of the funniest movies ever. Most guys who start smoking do it because their parents do. If your parents don't smoke, then you can Febreze your clothes to death, but they're still gonna find you out and clobber you for smoking because they don't and expect you not to either.
I watched cartoon characters smoke, jump off cliffs, get smashed by safes, and get sucked into vacuum cleaners and I haven't done one of those things. Blaming cartoons is scapegoating entertainment because the parents don't want to take the blame for not instilling proper values in their guys. A basic lesson guys should be taught (if they're too stupid to figure it out on their own) is that you shouldn't do everything you see on TV, cartoons or live-action. Why should cartoons be forced to give moral lessons?
Like, take Sesame Street. I have no problem with teaching racial harmony, but have you seen that piece of crap show lately? It's so damn hokey! Where's the Count, and Monsterpiece Theatre? Why is it so much Elmo and live guys? Didn't having different-colored puppets teach racial harmony? I hate their new focus. Don't gimme morals in my cartoons. Gimme phonics, gimme Bloodhound Gang, gimme Oscar b!tching and moaning. But morals are for parents to teach. |
